I just don't get it

T-minus one day.

What is wrong with this country's populace? How did a president who got us involved in the most unpopular war in recent memory (and who's botched the job, to boot), raped the environment, trampled our civil liberties, and divided the country like nothing since the Civil War manage to eek out re-election? This has got to be the biggest used car sale in history. We knew it was a lemon, we test drove it, we told ourselves we weren't going to buy it...and yet, when we get back to the dealership, we find ourselves signing the purchase order.

Or maybe, I should be asking, what is wrong with the Democrats? We had a vulnerable president and an environment ripe for booting out the incumbent. Bush's numbers are in the toilet, our deficit is beyond gross, the economy is sputtering. It was 1st and goal on the 5 yard line. Not only did we fail to get in the end zone, but we missed the field goal attempt. How did we blow it?

Either way, I just don't get it. Whether the populace was bamboozled or whether Democrats just dropped the ball, I still don't understand how Bush is still our president. Even worse, Republicans strengthened their hold on Congress. It's like 1992, only in reverse. Now, Bush and Co. are going to take this election as carte blanche to do whatever the hell they want. I fear for the next four years. Here are a few predictions...

1. Bush will privatize social security. Granny will keep her money, while the rest of us get bent over a table.

2. Iraq will only get worse, and Bush will be forced to reinstate the draft. More soldiers will die, morale will plummet, and Iraq will be the new Vietnam.

3. The environment will be pillaged. Poorly written laws like Clean Skies will pass and Big Energy will fill our air, water, and forests with pollution. Our natural parks will continue to degrade due to budget cuts.

4. The economy will show signs of anemic growth, promting more tax cuts. The budget deficit will balloon to obscene proportions that Bush will ignore because he'll be dead by the time it crushes our country.

So where does that leave us? Hanging on as best we can, I guess. The Democrats in Congress will have to work extra hard to keep the worst of the GOP abuses from passing, and can pretty much forget getting anything passed on their own. The country is going to have to brace for an inevitable disaster of some sort; either Iraq, or another terrorist attack on our soil. I've lost faith in the American public...only something of horrific magnitude is going to get them to open their eyes to the boondoggle they've unleashed by re-electing Bush.

Good job, America. You've elected a president as stupid as you are. You two fully deserve each other. When you're finally ready for a divorce, come look up the progressives you shunned. We'll be over here, building a bomb shelter.
